space invader
Taking influence from the pixilated expansionist aliens from the 1978 arcade game of the same name, Space Invader sees his role in street art as part of a game he is playing against the urban landscapes he invades.
These ‘Invasions’ are carried out with military precision; first, a city is staked out by Invader and a sentinel is put in place to monitor the location before the invasion begins. After leaving his motif around the city a photographer is employed to document the results, and a map is then drawn up of the invasion. This map identifies the locations of the works and also contains a final score based on Space Invader versus the city.
He has invaded thirty six cities around the world to date, with his infamous logo appearing everywhere from the Hollywood hills to Jacques Chirac’s lapel.
Invader’s mosaic style is constantly evolving and he is responsible for the new art movement Rubixcubism. This new media has seen Invader produce pieces made up entirely of Rubix Cubes and his recent Bad Men exhibition showcased this new style, examples of which are now available from RedHouse Originals.
