Born in Falkirk in 1988 Colin Wilson is one the most exciting and original artists to have emerged from the UK in recent times.
Wilson graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2010 and has already established a distinctive and engaging style that has captured the minds of collectors and galleries alike.
His series of photo-realist inspired portraits combine a fascination with classic black and white cinema and vintage New York graffiti. These stunning images produce an immediately iconic and arresting style and display Wilson’s accomplished hand and a dexterity way beyond his years. His canvasses transcend traditional techniques and herald a new way of portraiture and still life painting for the 21st Century.
Wilson produced a series of portraits based around characters from the golden age of black and white cinema. Subjects featured included Groucho Marx, Clark Gable and Roy Rogers.
"For me the appeal of black and white cinema is not only the aesthetic beauty that can be found inside such a simplistic colour spectrum, but also the fragile sense of innocence that it creates."
The artist’s still life paintings have expanded on similar techniques; Wilson examines the interaction of visual planes and the combination of two conflicting painting styles, abstraction and realism. His use of colour and typography within composition has also drawn comparisons with the early work of David Hockney.
Wilson has recently been working on a technique incorporating collage and paint and the results are stunning. The artist will unveil a brand new collection of work in this style with his first solo exhibition this October.
The artist lives and works from his studio near Edinburgh.
