NOW & THEN
Terry Cryer and Richard Fischer. Photographers.
With extraordinary stories to tell.
RedHouse Originals
15 Cheltenham Mount, Harrogate HG1 1DW
American Native Indians and monks in Tibet object to having their photographs taken. They say that the camera steals your soul. Terry Cryer thinks that it borrows it. Richard Fischer thinks that it displays it. Theft or a loan, it's a place in time captured. A physical place and a personal place. It's a photograph from a camera that captured a vision. There's no computer involved here. No digital manoeuvre. No nonsense. No second chance. There's a lot of instant action and a lot of waiting. You have to let it come at you, patiently. Then give it your best shot, right between the eyes. If you are going to steal a soul, at least do it with respect and panache. Like Terry and Richard do. That's the story. A century or so of humanity. A work in progress. Stories have a beginning and an end. So let's call this wonderful display an episode in an ongoing drama. The rest, as they say, is photography.
