We are delighted to present Jouissance by Christian Furr; a series of spectacular images from the artist’s most recent collection.
“All that is solid melts into air”
The work featured in the exhibition traverses the line between ephemeral transcendence and the real, immediate experience of 'Jouissance'.
Furr: “Jouissance is a loaded word. 'In French, ‘Jouissance’ means enjoyment, in terms both of rights and property, and of sexual orgasm - the latter has a meaning partially lacking in the English word ‘enjoyment’.”
The notion of ultimate, immersive jubilation flows through much of Furr’s output, and although the Jouissance series marks a clear break from his more formalist portraits, it widely retains the skilful use of oil paint and composition he is known for. The use of diamond dust and iridescent colour emphasises his concern with ‘special effects’, the artificial and the explosive.
"I saw a film of computer generated explosion at a VFX company and when I slowed it down and played backwards and forwards it looked poetic to me like a painting. I decided to paint it. I needed to paint the artificially generated explosion first to make it real - because it turns it into something else."
All works are available to view and purchase from Saturday 27th May and the exhibition continues until Saturday 15th July.
