RedHouse Gallery is delighted announce the launch of RESET; a new group exhibition featuring emerging painters, printmakers and sculptors alongside established international bluechip artists.
The exhibition title originates from a painting created by Nick Walker; an atmospheric and illuminating canvas from his stunning ‘Smoke Series’. Walker, who emerged from Bristol’s legendary street art scene alongside Banksy and 3D Del Naja, now lives and works in New York and has produced nine new paintings set to go on display for the first time.
Working entirely with aerosol on canvas, ultra-fine paint is applied layer upon layer giving the illusion of smoke, as if floating, suspended on the surface of the canvas. The paintings combine textural depth with mark-making reminiscent of Gerhard Richter and the great abstract expressionists. The themes behind the series focus on numerology and the universe at large.
Walker: “For me they are an exploration of life. Everything in life is based on numbers, a set equation that defines everything we encounter. Time, balance weight, rhythm, speed, measurement, density. The paintings are an homage to the deeper understanding of the universe and its various equations.”
Highlights also include two rare early drawings by Pop Art pioneer Andy Warhol. These works date from the mid 1950s when Warhol was working as an illustrator in New York, showing a lesser-known side of the artist and his skills as a draftsman and great experimenter. A group of drawings from the same period are currently on display as part of the artist’s major retrospective at Tate Modern.
“Warhol often finds his imagery in street photography but transforms the realism of photography into an emblematic representation. It can be said that, even at this perhaps very pre-formative moment in his artistic career, he shows us his amazing ability to iconify what is out there – reality. From this perspective, the drawings presented in this exhibition become a seminal experience of the aesthetic practice and philosophy of the image-maker, the image expropriator, the image-disseminator, Andy Warhol.”
