“Dogs are better than human beings because they know but do not tell”
Emily Dickinson

RedHouse Originals is delighted to announce ‘Vive le Chien’ by Peter Doherty; an exclusive collaboration featuring the artist’s French Dog motif as a series of original silkscreen prints on paper and canvas.

Peter Doherty is uniquely positioned as one of the most important and exciting multimedia artists of the 21st Century. In a relatively short career he has accomplished commercial and critical acclaim in numerous artistic arenas: as a successful songwriter and bandleader with The Libertines and Babyshambles; as a published poet and author with The Books of Albion; and most recently as an actor, starring alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg in Confessions of a Child of the Century directed by Sylvie Verheyde.

Doherty is also celebrated as a visual artist and works primarily on canvas and paper. Here, his deftness for collage and composition is combined with an intimate and often raw narrative style that has won the hearts of several leading collectors. Such an authentic and dynamic approach has led to exhibitions in Paris and London and substantial interest in Doherty as a modern painter and printmaker.

Vive le Chien
The series coincides with the feted return of Babyshambles who release their third album Sequel To The Prequel on September 2nd 2013. Though Doherty has created artwork for every album he has released since The Libertines, for their latest offering he has commissioned none other than Damien Hirst to design the sleeve.

Doherty’s French Dog image made its first appearance on the sleeve he designed for Babyshambles debut album Down In Albion (2005) and is now immortalised in glorious silkscreen as ‘Vive le Chien’.

The artist was particularly keen to keep the edition exclusive and so the prints are produced in very small editions. The prints are available in the following formats:
Chien Rouge (French Dog in Red)
Silkscreen print on BFK Rives paper
Signed in red pencil from an edition of 15

Chien Bleu (French Dog in Blue)
Silkscreen print on BFK Rives paper
Signed in red pencil from an edition of 45

There are also three unique versions on canvas; Chien Rouge, Chien Bleu and Chien Noir.

All artworks are available to purchase online here and for further details about the collection please contact the gallery here.

“The little French Dog pops up all over the place in London. If you look closely enough you’ll see the motif on the outside tube trains and old ladies shopping baskets... A lot of kids are having tattoos as well. He’s a little French Dog!!”
Peter Doherty

‘Vive le Chien’ will be on show at the gallery until Saturday 5th October 2013.
