Biography

Alfie Kungu, a contemporary British artist born in Hebden Bridge in 1993, is celebrated for his playful paintings that mix figurative and abstract styles.

Drawing inspiration from his Kenyan roots, Kungu draws upon nostalgic memories of carnival celebrations inherent within the Diaspora, providing an opportunity to connect with a wider community that he belongs to and feels disconnected from. His art, often featuring distorted yet familiar characters, is influenced by everything from nature to music, which he constantly listens to. Kungu’s collaborations with brands like Nike, North Face, and Selfridges showcase his love of experimentation, fun and freedom. The artist has exhibited with Carl Freedman Gallery, Haricot Gallery, the Contemporary African Art Fair and Bloomberg New Contemporaries.

I like to think of painting as an escape to a more natural and imaginative state of mind…I’m finding it to be a therapeutic process in connecting with my Diaspora community, it’s important to me to feel a sense of fulfilment and unity.”
