John Middleton: Pure Abstraction

'The Godfather to the Harrogate Art Scene'

It is with a great sadness that we share the news that artist John Middleton passed away on Thursday 27th June, 2024. John was a huge inspiration to all at the gallery – friends, artists, and collectors alike – and we would like to echo his family’s words: that John “will be truly missed by countless people. But his art will live on forever.”

For over 45 years John lived and worked reclusively in his studio, with many considering him as ‘the Godfather to the Harrogate art scene‘. Completely self-taught, he worked predominantly in gouache and watercolour creating ‘pure abstractions’, works that boldly embraced the metaphysical through explorations into dreamscapes, the subconscious and the spiritual; “a world where meaning is in the eye of the beholder“.

John triumphantly achieved the life of a true artist – one that was devoted to painting without compromise. This Summer we are humbled to showcase a selection of his last works, as requested by his estate.

Pure Abstraction by John Middleton will open on Saturday 3rd August and will show until the end of the month.
