Classic Movie and Pop Icons In New Harrogate Exhibition
Graham Chalmers reports
Stunningly cool collages and paintings of 1950s film icons and 1960s pop culture feature in a new exhibition launched in a Harrogate art gallery this weekend.
Artist Thomas James Butler will unveil his new show, Shooting Bottles, at RedHouse Originals Gallery this Saturday.
Running from February 18 to March 18, the exhibition features notable icons from past pop and movie history seen in new, surrealistic contexts, from actor Marlon Brando to Rolling Stone Brian Jones.
Though the charismatic Yorkshireman's attractive and memorable compositions have featured in various group exhibitions and collaborative projects, this will be the first time RedHouse have shown a dedicated collection of Butler’s work.
The new images retain the identifiable charm of Butler’s visual signature; crafting simplicity with strong lines, bold application of colour and an appreciation of Dadaist assemblage.
The exhibition will also mark the release of the artist’s first print edition.
Located at at 15 Cheltenham Mount, RedHouse Originals gallery is well-known for its close links not only with Pop Art but actual pop artists.
A recent exhibition at RedHouse saw an exclusive performance by members of The Coral.
This Saturday afternoon's invitation-only launch event for Thomas James Butler: Shooting Bottles will include an intimate acoustic performance by Seafoam Green (Mellowtone Records).
