Harrogate’s most rock ’n’ roll gallery is paying tribute to the momentous year England won the World Cup in an exciting day of art, live music and talk.
Spirit of 66 is an independently-promoted day of creative events celebrating 1966 – the greatest year in rock n roll history and the year Bobby Moore led his team to victory.
The event will begin at RedHouse Originals gallery in Harrogate on Saturday, July 30, 50 years to the day since England’s ultimate sporting triumph.
Gallery owner Richard McTague said: “1966 was such a year of excitement and this new event aims to recreate that with some VIP guests.”
The programme will include: 4.30pm: Exhibition: Classic 1966 music photographs by Gered Mankowitz, who shot the cover of The Rolling Stones’ Between the Buttons album and a million other things, plus 1966 World Cup final memorabilia and memories and exciting new contemporary art inspired by 1966. The Chessmen 5.30pm: “The Beatles vs The Stones – First-hand accounts by the people who knew them best”.
Chris Saleswizc and Dudley Edwards In Conversation with Graham Chalmers of the Harrogate Advertiser. Face to face with ex-NME’s golden age journalist Chris Saleswizc, distinguished music critic.
The author of 15 books including Redemption Song: the Definitive Biography of Joe Strummer, Mick & Keith: Parallel Lines and McCartney. Chris is a friend of Mick and Keith. Plus artist Dudley Edwards, member of mid-1960s design collective BEV responsible for Carnaby Street shop designs and Paul McCartney’s ‘magic piano’ which he uss on tour to this day.
Edwards lived with McCartney for six months in 1966.
Live psychedelic gig: 8.30pm to 10pm. Headliners: The Chessmen, a high energy Sixties-influenced, Paisley-shirted three-piece Leeds-based band currently touring their acclaimed debut single Gonzo. Venue: The Club, Victoria Avenue, Harrogate – Victorian club whose past members included Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and JR Tolkien.
