Dick Polak: A 20th Century Boy

Rare Photographs & Editions at The Gibson Gallery

The next instalment at The Gibson Garage London will present the work of renowned photographer Dick Polak (1940-2025).

This exclusive exhibition, curated by RedHouse Gallery, features original vintage prints and unique artist proofs from the photographer’s archive.

All artworks are available to view and purchase now from The Gibson Gallery – request the exhibition catalogue by clicking here.

Polak’s images provide an intimate glimpse into the vibrant lives of some of the most iconic performers from the 1960s and 70s. The collection includes candid portraits of The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Faces, The Who and T-Rex amongst others.

Highlights include documentary photography from the the 1968 filming of The Rolling Stones Rock ‘N’ Roll Circus, in which Polak was personally invited to shoot by Mick Jagger. The concert film included a one-off performance by legendary supergroup Dirty Mac – featuring John Lennon and Yoko Ono on vocals, Eric Clapton on guitar, Keith Richards on bass and Mitch Mitchell (The Jimi Hendrix Experience) on drums.

Polak developed long lasting and meaningful relationships with many of the people he photographed, blurring the lines between photographer and friend. “Hanging out” more than “shooting”enabled him to capture some remarkably relaxed and candid material.

Dick’s old pics are great! He was always there snapping away but you never saw him. Dick’s ok, you can tell from his photos.
Ronnie Wood

The exhibition is complimented by new prints from the Paint It Black series by friend, artist, and The Rolling Stones guitarist, Ronnie Wood.

Though Polak sadly passed away in April 2025, his legacy lives on through these incredible images.
