Keith Haring: New Wave | Group Exhibition

Group Exhibition

“Drawing is still basically the same thing it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic”

Keith Haring

We are delighted to present Keith Haring: New Wave; an exhibition celebrating the artist and activist’s indelible influence on contemporary society.

The exhibition follows news this month of a world auction record price for a Haring mural, when his installation ‘Untitled (The Church of the Ascension Grace House Mural)’ achieved $3,860,075 at Bonhams in New York. This was the first Haring mural ever to come to auction, the monumental 85ft work was painted circa 1983/1984 in the stairwell of Grace House, a former convent and home of the Catholic Youth Organisation in Upper Manhattan.

2019 has been bumper year for Haring fans, and the Harrogate exhibition follows closely on from the artist’s first major UK retrospective at Tate Liverpool.

Keith Haring: New Wave features original signed prints, exhibition posters and vintage ephemera, showcasing the artist and his influence on modern living contemporaries in the late 20th century and beyond. Classic works are complemented by documentary photography by Ben Buchanan plus in addition to works by contemporary artists inspired by Haring. This illustrious cast includes Banksy, Blek le Rat, Florence Blanchard, Peter Blake, Mr Brainwash, Thomas James Butler, Shepard Fairey, Gareth Griffiths, Damien Hirst, KAWS, Pete McKee, Candie Payne, David Rusbatch, Schoph, Wilma $ Stone, James Straffon, Joe Suzuki, and Nick Walker.

“Keith Haring’s influence cannot be overstated. The messages in his work are more vital today than ever, and the vibrant and universal nature of the imagery makes him one of the great communicators of our time. Haring is a firm gallery favourite and we are thrilled to be presenting this special collection over the holiday period.”
